Target450 is our vision to prevent and end youth homelessness for an extra 450 young people every night. Through Kids Under Cover’s innovative Studio Program and Village 21 projects, we are already making a real difference—but we need your help to do more.

 

We believe in breaking the cycle before it starts. Together, we can provide safe, stable housing to young people at risk, including those leaving statutory care or facing the youth justice system.

THE IMPACT

What are the most commonly neglected areas in most issues whether they are social, health, financial: early intervention and support. Kids Under Cover understands this with regard to youth homelessness and its fabulous efforts are showing results. It has a very sound evidence base for the expansion of its work for youth and their families to step in with housing initiatives to prevent youth homelessness. We could not be more impressed and supportive.

As a regular donor of this organisation, I find the whole concept so inspiring. Obviously stepping in before homelessness is the way to make such a huge difference in children's lives. Every night...

7,628 young people experience homelessness in Victoria¹. Many face uncertain futures, trapped in a cycle of instability, trauma, and isolation. The impact is especially severe for First Nations young people, who make up 36% of the homeless youth population².

Our current government funding level means we are only able to meet 5% of demand for our Studio Program, we wish to extend our strategic partnership with the Victorian Government to reach more vulnerable young people at risk of homelessness.

Why 450?

450 is the number of additional young people accommodated in studios every night if we are successful in our investment proposal to the Victorian Government. We currently house 1,000 young people each night, achieving a 12% reduction in youth homelessness.

Prevention is possible: securing further government funding to house an additional 450 young people would help us achieve a reduction in homelessness by 17%—saving young lives, saving tax payer dollars and ensuring a brighter future for the next generation.

What is needed: Government investment to expand our impact

Kids Under Cover are committed to achieving systemic change for young people facing homelessness, and to meet our goal, we need greater Victorian Government investment.

This investment will actually avoid substantial costs of young people falling into homelessness, out of home care and youth justice.

More importantly, it will help 450 more young people stay connected to family, community and education as a pathway to a brighter future.
